YouTube now allows 15 minute videos

Post by MordEth »

In case anyone wasn’t aware of this and might find it useful to know, I thought I’d point out that YouTube now allows you 5 additional minutes of video length...or one more side if you’re doing multiple-side videos from your record collection...

From The Register:

YouTube ups video time limit

Generosity knows no bounds

YouTube has bumped its upload limit to 15 minutes for users of the Google-owned video sharing website.

Previously only videos with the running time of 10 minutes or less could be added to the site, which was frustrating for any naughty individuals wanting to upload full-length feature films to YouTube.

Still, jacking up the upload limit by just five minutes isn’t all that generous, given that many videos are longer than that, forcing users to split their film into segments before adding them to YouTube.

Anyways, that hasn’t stopped Google splattering some PR goo all over its announcement.

“We encourage you to take full advantage of this new time limit by making a video of your ‘15 minutes of fame’. Imagine that this video is all the world will ever know about you: what would you want to communicate?

“What will be the enduring stamp you’ve left on us all? Tag your video with ‘yt15minutes,’ upload it by Wednesday, August 4, and we’ll select a handful of people to truly gain their 15 minutes of fame by featuring them on the YouTube homepage in a future spotlight.”

It’s like Andy Warhol never died.

YouTube said it had increased the upload limit, after improving its Content ID system and other tools used by copyright owners.

In other words, it’s got better at pinpointing video clip ownership, if not at making some money out of the service for the Google mothership. ®
