HMV base goes round and round

The turntable is not the only part of this base which goes around in circles!

Some of you might have spotted this HMV No. 5 base and thought to yourselves that you were experiencing deja vu? You would be right. Firstly, it was sold by "gypsypop" (amongst literally dozens of similar bases missing parts)on eBay to "uncle-monkey", who unceremoniously dumped it on a heap of broken records in his "Gramophone Salon" (lock-up garage). It was a sad sight. It then gets put back on eBay, as the parts to complete it couldn't be found amongst the spares (although a definite reproduction elbow and bent winding handle were found, listed on eBay and sold for which no feedback has been received by the seller for either item after 20 days. That's curious. Maybe the "buyer" believed the elbow was going to be original and nickel plated? Who knows? It's a funny thing when someone who claims to know that a horn they've never seen in the flesh is reproduction, and yet apparently can't even determine whether a reproduction elbow is in fact an original or not!  ).

The current seller "kraz1901", a collector in Belgium, bought the base and then re-lists it himself on eBay almost straight away. Was he also disappointed with this transaction? However, the auction ended with the base at little over £300 (or Euro equivalent). It had sold to "uncle-monkey" for £240. He got £285 back. Add the shipping from UK to Belgium on top and you have little wonder why the same base is now being re-listed for the FORTH TIME at $700 (£461). So was the last auction simply a shill bidding "dry run" to establish interest and price?

If the current seller is desperate to be rid of items and he is "cleaning up his spares" I wonder why he bothered to purchase a base full of "scuffs and stains" from the UK, that he didn't want in the first place?

Medic!
