You guys are right. I think it is a 104. To my untrained eye, they look similar enough that I think I mislead myself. I'll try to get some pics later. I know it's 2016 but I still don't have one of those pocket time wasters, AKA phone.

The most evident external difference between the 104 and 130 is the lid: it has square ends on the 130, and the 104 has curved corners. Internally the 104 has a small motor, and the 130 has the larger 2-spring motor.

Yup... it's a 104A. Should I be happy or disappointed?

It winds enough to play a record for about a minute or so before the spring skips in the barrel. It sounds damn fantastic... a little bass, even, like a little Credenza. It blows a Granada away.

I'm happy.

I'm giving a gramophone to an overseas Mercedes restoration customer of mine who came over last summer for a visit, saw my machines, and was just fascinated with them. I'll either do this one or a VV-170 that's been in my repair queue for a couple years and send it to him with some records. I'm into each of these machines about USD $125 each, so it won't hurt too much. He spends a lot of money with me and the hobby can use another convert.

I originally thought about sending a Victor 1 but these sound better so I think one of them would be a better introduction.

Well, pulled it down today expecting to find a double spring motor but it appears as it's an HMV #69, and the issue with it is that the rivet that holds the outer spring coil to the can has pulled through the can.

What's the best approach here? Obviously a pop rivet is out of the question, even with a washer on the outside. What was used here originally? Any idea? Would a nut and bolt work in a pinch with the bolt head rounded and on the inside, nut on the outside with locktite and the threads peened?

Nut and bolt will work OK , but once fitted you need to file or grind the nut down so it doesn't touch the Governor when working

This is the correct grill cloth , it would look bright but it was originally

Thanks for info on that. There are three swatches, but all are different colors on my monitor, and none of them look even close to what was posted previously. Not doubting, just saying.

It definitely looks like it's a 130, there's a glimpse of the "carved" rectangles on the top corners of the case, plus this has feet, which the 104 didn't. Sounds like it's been re-motored.

The problem with replacing the rivet with a nut and bolt is that there has to be a space behind the head of the bolt for the spring to hook into. So how do you peen over the threaded end and still leave that gap? It would be far simpler to get hold of another spring drum, they are very common.

Not here in the USA, I'm afraid, or anywhere on UK or German eBay. I have a donor HMV portable parts machine, but while the motor is very similar, the spring barrel is different. This spring barrel in the 104 looks like it is bent over the side lid, on the portable the barrel is held onto the "lid" with small screws.
