It looks like the horn was rusted with holy water.

I think the phonograph was designed to play holy music only. Maybe it is actually a wood horn and the termites hit. Tom B

It's a metal Victor or HMV horn. How it got like that is a mystery to me.

Thanks for the lift Bill. I LOVE the occasional Firesign Theatre references on here!

Is it a Swiss machine? That might explain it.

Re: Holier than thou ??
I suspect it is a gunshot victim. Maybe someone with a rifle and bird shot accidentally hit it. It would explain the tons of tiny holes.
I would suspect rust, like the horn was sitting outside a window or under a leaky portion of a roof, but it looks to be in very nice shape other than the myriad of holes toward the end. The second horn is definitely a rust victim.

I agree on the birdshot theory
I shot birdshot at cans and thin sheet metal plates many times both legal and...oops sorry eh!..
anyway it's clear to me there's lots of damage to the metal on the outside of the horn in form of rust and protruding metal and nearly none on the inside it has holes yes.. but the metal and paint are unblemished
this horn was victim multiple times to a shotgun happy hornicidal maniac!
also, the horn must have been off the machine since it is free of any such holes so were dealing with a mutilator aswell (jack the nipper!?)
or,... was this machine a gallant hero in world war one! the red singing prince of the trenches!
