Question Regarding Pathé VII Reproducer

Post by pellicano1 »

All, I am new with Pathé machines and need some tips!

I am having issues with the Concert Reproducer. When inserting a full round stemmed needle the holder on the side sticks out and the screw which holds the ball needle in will not reach the threads. I have another needle which does not have a full round stem. Kind of goes to a point and goes in but not sure if this is right.

Also, what position is the reproducer supposed to be when playing record?

Thanks all!!

Someone more familiar with Pathé machines should be able to offer advice.

Is there anything inside the chuck that might be obstructing the stylus shaft? The stylus shown looks as though it may have been filed down to fit.

As for playing position: if you're playing vertical cut records, Pathé or otherwise, the diaphragm should be facing forward in an upright position. If you're playing regular 78s with a steel needle, turn the reproducer until the diaphragm faces to the right: in either case, the stylus shaft should be perpendicular to the record (as seen from the front).

thanks Bill!!

I also received this from Facebook group. I faced the reproducer diaphragm down when playing lateral records with steel needle installed. Sounds nice.

Ron L'Herault: For vertical playback, the diaphragm should be facing forward. There should be a noticeable rounded end, usually sapphire that touches the record a bit on its side. To play lateral records, you remove that stylus and put a steel needle into the chuck. The reproducer twists counter clockwise, bringing the needle to a vertical position. In your picture, it looks like the ball stylus is pushed into the holder. I've never seen one with that wire sticking out the other end. If you can push the stylus out a bit, maybe a drop of superglue will keep it in the right position.
