Here is an EMG radiogram with documented history. It came with receipts and related ephemera. It was really mouldy and dirty. I only cleaned it and slowly brought it up on a variac. It’s reproduction of 78’s and mono LP’s is clear but warm with ambience from the reflex speaker. Very pleasant indeed.
This radiogram shows that EMG customers really did love their players and had total faith in EMG. This one being looked after and upgraded by EMG for nearly 40 years.
• c. 1935 - c. 1938: E.M.G DR3 radiogram with baffle speaker.
• 1944: It was purchased “from an employee of EMG for £100” by Sir Ian Critchett, an officer of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).
• 1947: Returned to EMG and fitted with a second lightweight pickup.
• 1957: Converted by EMG to play LP’s. Adding a D.R. 28B amp, a FM receiver, new turntable and pickup. Basically, upgraded to a D.R. 28.
• 1958: Baffle speaker replaced by a single EMG corner reflex unit.
• 1964: Jack-plug connections fitted by EMG to allow for a tape unit.
• 1975: Turntable & pickup upgraded by EMG.
• (at some stage the D.R.28 amp was re-numbered D.R.38)
• 1989: D.R.38 amplifier was restored by Alan Gates. (Anyone here know of him? He has done a great job)

Boy, that's a nice setup! Wonderful that you have all the documentation to cover all the manufacturer upgrades too! I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Yes it remained mono. The Goldring Lenco GL75 is wired up for mono with a Sonotone flip over cartridge.
George Martin once said: "You've never really heard Sgt Pepper until you've heard it in mono."

Fascinating to have such wonderful history Chunny and many thanks for posting---the sound is great. It is such a rare thing to have the complete story of any machine isn't it ? My own, which has its original baffle, has been modified by EMG at Newman Street but I do not have the dates---added tuner and Lenco motor/turntable etc.

I'm very pleased to see your video Chunny. I hadn't realised that those speakers were designed to fire upwards into a corner - which now makes complete sense, as the Bulgin socket is on the same side as the driver and reflex apertures (i.e. hidden from the listener) and the 'back' (actually the front) is beautifully veneered. I have a similar EMG speaker myself, but have been unable to give it house space and voice so far. Now I'll know how to position it correctly when the time comes - many thanks!
