What is this columbia model?

Post by AntonLagrelius »

Hello!

I just picked up this columbia gramophone from a flea market but i can’t seem to find the same model anywhere else. I’ve been searching on the internet for the same model but whitout any luck. The model is to me unknown. I would be greatful if i could get some help with identifying this model.

I will provide pictures of the gramophone.

Thanks in advance

That is indeed a very nice 1927/28 colonial portable. Congratulations!

Surely a post 1931 model ? As it has the HMV type needle holder in the side , Columbia models wouldn't have used this until after the formation of EMI in 1931 , or would they ?

I have seen this model three up to this point. Two times in Japan, sold as a 1928 model. Once in Spain as a 1927/28 model. This is all I know.

Edit: But of course you are right, it would be!

Edit 2:

The record holder is the same as the 112 in 1928/29.

The successor of 250, the 212 had the newer record album style same as the 202a (1928-).

This 250 is an "overseas" model not catalogued in the UK, and probably built in Columbia's Japanese factory. I have a similar G-208 which has featured on this forum and elsewhere several times.

Post-1931 EMI fittings include the corner needle bin, as Soundgen has pointed out, and the "Pakawa" carrying handle. Following the 1931 merger most of the Columbia machine range was quickly phased out, but some Plano-Reflex portables continued until about 1937. I have a very late 202 with a side wound HMV 270 series motor, which EMI fitted after Columbia's contract with Garrard had expired.
