Help with Dating HMV - Emma Destinnova - My Homeland

Post by Valecnik »

Could anyone tell me when and where these sides were recorded?

- HMV Cat No. DJ 101 (7-54005) My Homeland - Destinnova & Dinh Gilly
- HMV Cat No. DJ 101 (7-54005) The Wedding - Destinnova & Dinh Gilly

I'm guessing around 1914 but would like more specific information.

Any help much appreciated!

Hi,

These sides were recorded by Victor at their Camden studios on April 23, 1914, originally released that year on single-sided discs both in the USA and Europe.

The First World War brought out a staunch patriotism in Destinnova--as can be seen from the many lovely records she made from the Czech song repertoire during those years.

Thanks Steven, Dan,

I knew someone here on the forum would come through for me as always. I also posted the recordings themselves in the music section in case you are interested. The link is below. :D

You are right Steven. Just to clarify the patriotism was a Czech patriotism, not a love for the Austo-Hungarian Empire of which the Czech lands were then a part.

As you may also know it basically ruined her career as she had her passport revoked and was kept under a sort of house arrest for the war years. She was unable to bounce back internationally after the war.

Yes--and it seems her voice after the war, according to contemporary accounts, was, sadly, past its prime.

When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it would be impossible to date her, since she has passed on a long time ago... :?

Apparently y'all two aren't the only ones. Punctuation is wonderful.
