Post subject:  Please can you id my gramophone and sound box ?

I bought this at auction.

It has no identifying maker mark / logo on the gramophone. The sound box has nothing to id it either.

I note that the sides of the gramophone at the top are reinforced with wooden 'wedges / supports' - mahogany I guess.

It is very dusty.

There is no-where to store the wind up handle nor a needle storage tray.

The sound box is quite small when for example compared to an HMV 4 or 5b.

It has a 12 inch turntable.

Can some-one please:

1) Identify the gramophone make ?

2) Identify the sound box make ?

3) Tell me how to remove the motor board so I can look at the motor ? I tried removing the 4 screws in the motor board corners and the 'lid stay' and moving it backwards away from the wooden wedges but it seems that something stops it fro coming out. It moves a bit so I am thinking maybe more screws need to be removed ?

4) Please id the metal part in the last (or first) two photo's which came with the gramophone. I don't know what it is.

Thank you so very much for any help you can give.

The speed control is a Paillard, so when you are able to remove the motor board you should find a Paillard motor.

Fantastic ! Thank you so very much !!!

After I read the following link following your information:

http://vi.vipr.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=291003998796&t=0&tid=310&category=1442&seller=iangram&excSoj=1&excTrk=1&lsite=3&ittenable=false&domain=ebay.ie&descgauge=1&cspheader=1&oneClk=1&secureDesc=0

it all makes sense !

Quote: Gramophones could be imported without any identification or identified with the Importers specification.

Even the Soundbox (part that holds the needle) could be provided with any required identification.

I won't bother looking at the motor as it works just fine and I now believe the whole machine is a Paillard.

The only thing I don't know is the date of production but that is okay.

Thank you again !

Stupid question, but did you remove the crank before trying to slide the motor board back and up?

Oh, I am such a fool ! No, I did not - I am so very grateful that you mentioned this as this is probably why the board would not come out.

I will have a look at the motor tomorrow morning then and post a photo.

Thank you !

Oh, it's a long shot but do you have any idea what the metal piece is in photo 1 and 2 please I wonder ?

Unless I am mistaken, it does not appear to be a phonograph part.

It does appear to be some sort of "lift" piece that teeter totters and lifts something up when depressed with a finger... BUT WHAT??? :?

Maybe someone will recognize what it belongs to...

Thank you Curt. Hope someone does recognise it.

The spring barrels look like those I found in a Thorens motor in a "Savoy" off brand table top I fixed up for a friend. It also looks like you have a fiber gear in good shape! If you look at my posts lately you'll see me yammering on about my Paillard fiber gear :) ... lucky! Don't oil it. I've learned from endless searching that destroys them.
Here is a guess about the mystery object ... could it be to actually help lift the motor board?

Hi

Wonder no more.....Thorens as well just for reference.

The soundbox was king of a generic copy of the Exhibition & is found blank as well as with lots of different names such as Saturn, Exploitation....and even one in expectation of Halleys Comet that made a pass in 1910
