Yes they are one and the same thing, now almost entirely replaced by synthetic glues which the woodworm don't like the taste of.

Many thanks for these interesting photos Roger and, as you say, the benefits of "progress" are to be debated.

Any other insights you may come across would be very much appreciated. I note that the manager of Merriotts is M.L.Clark (without an "e") so there may be no connection to the Clifton D.L.Clarke (with an "e").

Incidentally, you might be amused by the scene when we came to remove the horn from the still progressing auction. There was no option but to bring it forward right through the hall passing the auctioneer who stopped the proceedings and asked where I was going to be able to find sufficient tobacco ! I murmured something about old age and needing a large ear trumpet.............
