There seems to be a 'finger plate' or something located just below the speed regulator (Bottom left in photo below).
I can't see how it is attached (if it is) but seems to match the rest of the fittings.
I don't think that I have ever seen such a thing and wonder what it could be ?

The original speed control plate is still present. I assume that the metal corner piece is a later addition, whose purpose is known only to the person who added it.

That's one of the corner pieces used when fixing a mirror to the wall, but why it's there, we'll never know.
