On the river.

Four young men, possibly Oxford or Cambridge undergraduates, on the river with their gramophone.
Let's hope they did not end up in the river. Gramophones cannot swim.

Located in the Detroit River is the Island of Belle Isle. For well over 100 years it has been a lovely park. There are canals running through the island that used to be used extensively for canoeing. Many old photographs depict dozens of canoes, many with horned phonographs/gramophones aboard. I have long wondered just how many phonographs went "over the side" and are still rusting away beneath the surface.

It seems that Victor encouraged owners to take their machines onto the water :

"It seems that Victor encouraged owners to take their machines onto the water."

A great marketing ploy in the era before "planned obsolescence"...
"The phonograph† is not of any commercial value."

"No one needs a Victrola XX, a Perfected Graphophone Type G, or whatever you call those noisy things."
