I recently acquired a Amberola V. I was wondering if the broken castings such as the one discussed here are common on these motors? Are the castings pot metal?

I've owned three of these and have never seen or heard of the castings breaking. The machine above must have been subjected to some extreme punishment to break like that! As far as I know there is no pot metal in the motor castings.

I'll bet a dollar that it broke when the spring broke. May also explain why the spring barrel was missing.

It may have been dropped on a hard surface like concrete.

The fellow who bought this V a couple years ago is still using it and says it works great. The repair job seems to be a good fix.
