I've had 3 best finds from Craigslist.

1) Victor Orthophonic 8-9.
2) Brunswick Cortez
3) Victor Orthophonic Credenza*

*This one looked beautiful on the outside, but had an electric Hi-Fi installed inside. Luckily, no damage to the horn! It's now an original, legitimate Credenza again!

I don't have much luck getting to stuff on time (and JerryVan is my competition!). I did however just buy something really awesome on CL this week, sight unseen... Picking up Saturday. Stay tuned!

I bought a Victor V with a 24B horn. It's being held at a friends and I'll pick it up on my way to Union next June. Can't wait!

More than half of what I have these days came from Craigslist.

Two highlights would be an Edison P-1 portable, and my mismatched Diamond Disk mechanism factory installed in an Amberola 1A cabinet. The latter can be seen here:

Tons of stuff.

"Best" is hard to define though...

Rarity? Bargain price? Great interaction with the seller? All-round uniqueness? Surprise cool things that come as part of the deal? Most original?

I enjoy CL because of its barely-controlled chaos. One just never knows what will turn up.

For us phono collectors, though, I think a major point must be that it enables us to still find unmolested items "in the wild" rather than things that have been through the hands of other collectors. So we can find a machine and its original paperwork and maybe a matching cabinet or stand and its record collection and accessories...and be more assured on things like that the reproducer and machine are contemporaneous for use in serial number correlations, for example.

When I first started collecting I brought a Victrola XVII. It was my first so it was my best but it also was my worst. It had a little fire damage on the front so I took it to a furniture refinisher. After buying two tops and having it refinished I had about $900 into it. Tom B
