Victrola VE-XVlll

Post by oldtvsandtoys »

Ok guys I just bought a victrola ve-xviii off of craigslist. I don’t plan on keeping it. Someone painted it years ago.
It is missing the reproducer, light bulb and casters. It was bought at JL Hudson’s in Detroit.
It is beyond me to strip and restore it. Is it worth more if I part it out or sell it whole? I live just north of
Detroit so if anyone wants it let me know.
One last thing does anyone sell the lightbulb for these?

Its originally a mahogany machine. Pictures coming soon.

In not taking condition in consideration, the parts of an XVIII certainly are not worth as much as the whole. I would not say this true of something like a VE 7-26 or RE-75, even a VV-XI. IMHO of course.

The cabinet looks to me, as if in very nice condition, other than the hideous paint.

If it were me, I'd try to find a buyer for it complete. It'd be a shame to destroy it.

I would think if it cost $1000 to restore, you would be still $1000 ahead of the game. I paid $3250 for my VE-XVIII in very nice working condition.

The listing says not tested. I would look for any bare or shorted wires and if none, plug her in briefly thru a power strip with a fuse and see if she spins. It’s not like there’s capacitors or transformers.

No longer available on ebay. It would be interesting to see what is under the paint and to follow the restoration.
