Those are really great and would go for big money in the states. It will be interesting to see how they do in the auction. Their estimated value seems extremely low to me.

These are G&T record cabinets for 7 inch records. They were originally supplied with the Style De Luxe No.10 machine of 1900/1902, which stood on the cabinet.

The last example I saw for sale made £1400 at the 2016 CLPGS Members Auction.

Would this type of record storage cabinet have been intended to provide a "pedestal" for one of the smaller footprint machines? I see it is 35.5cm (~14 inches) wide. If they did, that would have been a beautiful arrangement.

Thank you for sharing,

Yes that was exactly it's intended purpose, as I pointed out in my previous post.

Over time many of these early gramophones and storage cabinets became separated. Most of the gramophones were probably scrapped as they became obsolete, but some of the cabinets survived as they still fulfilled a useful function. The example which sold for £1400 was found in an antique shop, where it's true identity had not been recognised by the dealer.

I've had some thoughtful reflections on these. I bid on them but they sold for a 'total' of around £2976. Despite the auctioneers rather irritating estimate, I think they sold for about the right price? I very nearly bid £2600 but that would have ended up costing me over £3500 with all the buyers premiums and maybe I don't need two!

Congratulations to the winner. You are a true specialist. What I do notice about these recent auctions is that the talking machine market still seems very buoyant compared to other fields of antique collecting.

I have seen examples of these cabinets sell at auction on two past occasions in recent years. Both in specialist sales , around 2 years apart. On each occasion they sold for the same hammer price of £1400 , plus buyer's premium so I had a good idea beforehand that these two in one lot would sell for around the same sort of money. Probably would have done a little better if the auctioneers had offered them separately , as most collectors would probably not want to run to two. Ahh -- but of course the auctioneers are " experts " in their field -- or so they would have you believe -- but as most of us with any long term experience of auction rooms knows, although there are some very good auction houses out there , most
of them are the exact opposite ! As my father would have said ( about auction rooms ) as the reason for their apparent lack of knowledge when they should really know better, " They make their money too easily ". Salient words ! These record cabinets were bought by a room buyer well known to me. Dulcetto
