At one time, the Botanic Research checks were considered very common. They were sold in wholesale lots as large as 100 checks well into the 70s. Dealers typically paid around $35 per check to retail them for $75-$100. These days $600 is the average selling price.

Edison was 81 in 1928 does anyone really believe this is his signature on the cheque rather than a stamp , would he have signed hundreds of cheques at this age for such small sums ?

They are definitely real signatures, not stamped, and just as definitely written by Edison himself and not a secretary. That's just the way it was done. Even 30 years ago I often had to sign a few dozen checks in one sitting, and I was running a vastly smaller business.

Not necessarily. It depended upon how they set up the company structure. The Botanic Research project was his late-life favorite enterprise, in which he took a much more hands-on approach than some others.

Edit: I'm not sure how this ended up posted above the post I was replying to. :?

So did Edison sign cheques for all his dozens of companies ?

Here are a half-dozen that are on eBay currently (all way overpriced, by the way). If you look closely you'll see they are all different. Note particularly the 'umbrella' paraph details, as well as how he forms the E in Edison.

He must have spent every day signing cheques for as little as $2 , what a waste of time for petty cash !
