Fitted canvas covers for portables were generally supplied as accessories by HMV dealers and independent retailers. One such retailer was the Army & Navy Stores Ltd, whose customers might very well have been taking their portables overseas and wanted the extra protection of an outer cover.
The cover on this 101 has clearly done it's job well, as the machine is in near mint condition.
