It looks like the thing is to have been stuck onto the record, and the tang is supposed to hook onto the needle -- and stop the turntable. Ouch!

These had a small "footed" piece that fits onto the reproducer that would hit the tang, which would stop the turntable, the needle itself isn't what made it stop. The rubber on the bottom of these is always dried out. My early XIV came with one, but I've never replaced the rubber pieces and attempted to use it. Neat item, though!
