G&T Style No.11 Single Spring Monarch, circa 1902/3.

I bought my first cylinder machine, an Amberola 30, from this firm in 2005 for £200 when they auctioned a private collection of gramophones and phonographs comprising about 90 lots. I still have the catalogue. They should know better than to estimate this Monarch at £80/£120 in 2019. It should exceed this several times over.

I suspect they know their price estimate is low. With a low estimate they hope for many bidders which can turn into a bidding war complete with egos and auction fever.

The "Come and buy me" estimate is an old trick of the auctioneer's trade, but in the UK an £80/£120 estimate is widely interpreted as auctioneer speak for "Don't know". Perhaps whoever compiled the handsome colour illustrated 2005 catalogue has since left the firm.
