I have to say that this looks fascinating to me.

Possibly a real 'one off' piece of history ?

Very interesting indeed.

What an amazing survivor. It proves that there are still exceptionally rare items out there waiting to be discovered.
The accompanying memo suggests that these kits were sent on loan to cabinet makers working, or hoping to work, for Edison. There were probably several such kits in use, and for different cabinet designs, but this could well be the only one to have been preserved.

This has been for sale for at least two years.

At $8500 this is not surprising. As it was found during a house renovation it probably cost the seller nothing.
The right thing to do would be to loan or donate it to a museum, such as the Edison site.

Personally, I find this an interesting historical piece, but not at all valuable. Especially not $8500 valuable!

I agree with everyone.... what a neat find.... but, not for $8,500 :?

That is one where you just politely contact the seller, give them your information, and tell them to contact you when they need it gone. ;)

Honestly, I wouldn't want it if it were free. Can't play music with it. Not a pleasant piece to display. A pile of lumber to store for the sake of posterity. But then, not everyone sees things as I do, (thank goodness!!) ;)
