The following link, published by the Indiana Historical Society, shows a 1916 Typing Class at Manual High School, using a Victor phonograph for dictation. (note: it is extreme left of photo and you may need to zoom-out slightly)

It is difficult to tell from the photo what exactly the output device is; however, it does not appear to be a traditional horn.

Re: Victor Used in Typing Class
Sorry, unless you have posted the wrong pic....all I see is a Victrola VI. Nothing unusual given the date of the pic.

Judging from its size, and the fact that it uses a 12-inch turntable, it looks like a later VV-VI table top model, which had an enclosed horn -- http://www.victor-victrola.com/VI.htmrodpickett wrote: It is difficult to tell from the photo what exactly the output device is; however, it does not appear to be a traditional horn.

Always the clown and just prior to being sent to see the principal,
Cecil told his teacher that the ability to communicate complex ideas with his thumbs
will give him great advantages over his classmates!
James.

Alas, the visionary Cecil was too far ahead of his time to ever be vindicated amongst his peers - he remained the class idiot.
