Joint MBSGB/CLPGS Event Saturday 25 April 2015

Post by Wagnerian »

The Musical Box Society of Great Britain (MBSGB) and The City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society (CLPGS) are hosting a joint event at the Stow Maries World War 1 Aerodrome in Essex on Saturday 25th April from 10:00 onwards. Primarily part of the MBSGB's Annual General Meeting with talks and demonstrations of musical boxes and other mechanical music, the CLPGS President, Christopher Proudfoot will give an illustrated talk on WW1 music on disc and cylinder played on Gramophones and Phonographs from approx 15:00 to 16:30. CLPGS members and members of the public are welcome to all the talks.

Stow Maries Aerodrome in Essex is the best preserved WW1 areodrome in Europe with many of the original buildings remaining on site. The Aerodrome itself was originally opened towards the end of the Great War as a fighter base to defend London from Zepplin and bomber attacks and has remained in a remarkable state of presevation ever since. Situated between Chelmsford and Maldon in Essex UK the aerodrome is located off Hackmans Lane CM3 6PN. Full details of the Aerodrome/museum admission charges and location can be found on http://www.stowmaries.org.uk

Despite being in one of the most densely populated parts of the UK, Stow Maries is very isolated with no public transport to the Aerodrome itself. The nearest railway stations are at South Woodham Ferrers or North Fambridge both on the line from Wickford to Southminster and buses operate infrequently to Stow Maries village or Cold Norton (which is actually the nearest village to the Aerodrome) and then walk but the roads are very narrow and extremely busy with fast traffic. Taxis are available from South Woodham Ferrers station.

The plus side is that there are some great pubs in the area. "The Prince of Wales" in Stow Maries does very good food and usually has 5 or 6 reals ales on at any one time. "The Bell" at Purleigh also does good food and has excellent views over the surrounding countryside. There is also a George Washington connection to Purleigh in that one of his ancestors was once Rector there. "The Norton" in Cold Norton is owned and run by the villagers themselves. When the pub was closed and put up for sale, the locals clubbed together to buy it and it is now run as a community pub.

All the best
