The first CLPGS meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday Jsanuary 17 at 19:00 in the Bertrand Russell Room of the Conway Hall, Red Lion Sq. London, WC1 4RL (nearest tube: Holborn)

The presenter will be Aleks Kolkowski of the London Science Museum who in 2014 instigated the acoustic recording of the 1st movement of Beethovens 5th Symphony with the orchestra of students from the Royal College of Music. His talk will cover that landmark recording and other projects with which he has been involved.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

An absolutely riveting talk from a speaker who had reflected very carefully on the results of this experimental recording project, was able to pin-point the significant findings clearly for us, outline areas for further investigation, and hold the attention of a large audience with both humour and humility - a rare combination.

Even though I covered the project for the BBC in 2014, I came away with a much better grasp of the importance of the results, and the painstaking research which laid the groundwork for this enterprising effort to re-enact Arthur Nikisch and the Berlin Philharmonic's landmark recording of Beethoven's 5th in 1913.

A full write-up of the project (by Aleks and his colleagues) can be found in the Journal of the National Science Museum
