Seems like years ago an old antique dealer I knew always carried a small magnet in his pocket to test for brass which if I recall right the magnet won't stick to.

I just confirmed that, found a brass candle snuffer and a magnetic cup holder for cabinets and the magnet wouldn't hold to the brass.

Try it on pot metal! Does it work?

I tied it on my Brunswick tonearm which I know is pot metal gold plated I think. It has just a very slight pull to it. When I put in on the rim of the turntable it held tight like a magnet would. I assume then that pot metal perhaps has a mixture of things some of which create a very weak pull, regular steel a full hold.
