Berliner "Three Points Of Caution" Celluloid Tag

Post by gramophone-georg »

Does anybody repro these? Looks like it's held onto the traveling arm with four brads. Thanks for any info.

I have a decal for this tag... You need to supply the celluloid. It isn't on my website yet. Cost is $15 plus postage. Email me for details if you are interested.

Hi, Here is an image of Greggs decal on original celluloid. I did not attempt to remove the celluloid for fear of destroying it. I blue tape masked all around the tag. Cleaned off any remaining ink from the celluloid with a car polish. I applied the decal using Greggs specific instructions. Let dry completly! I used the liquid Micro Mask product on the tack heads and cleared coated the tag to protect it and diminish the decal line to nil.

Greggs decal is dead on, there is a small black dot at 2 oclock position that is an imperfection in the celluloid on my machine. Gregg is probably the only source but Thank Goodness the product is so good!

That's great news but I don't have a tag at all. Can one get celluloid somewhere and, if so, what size do I need?

Gregg, I know it's not on your site... it was the FIRST place I looked, LOL.

A lot of old piano and reed organ keys were celluloid veneer instead of ivory. I am not sure what size would be right for your tag, but I think it would be about right. If you have a local piano shop you may be able to get an old celluloid veneered key and use a piece of that. It will even have the right age. A piano key is supposed to be .925" wide, but can be as small as .875. I think that the rectangular, widest section is approximately 1.75" long.

Another possibility is cream colored pick guard material from a luthier's supply company.

I have also used a piece of a celluloid dresser tray, cut to size... Easy to find reasonably priced in eBay. The down size is that it has to be sanded to thickness which can take a while. Power sanders cut to fast so safer hand sanding. Leave one side untouched then polish with 600 sandpaper before applying the decal. Topcoat with a couple coats of spray lacquer and the lines don't show . I usually use a satin or flat finish so it doesn't look wet and new. I have used this for other tags as we'll. Sometimes Amber or yellow tonig lacquer to age it.

George,
I'd be happy to help make you one out of polyeurethane resin. Can you cut a template out of sheetmetal, or plastic?

I have no idea what size it is. I think I will get some cream pick guard material off eBay and then a couple of Gregg's decals to play around with, and go from there. Looks like the decal will be the guide as to dimensions.

The tag is 2 ¾" long by 13/16ths tall, probably only a 32nd thick. John
