My New Baby - Victor Monarch Jr. Type E

Post by MikeB »

I just picked up this machine, a Victor Monarch Jr. Type E, if I have my models correct. It is serial number 55617. I assume that this is an early one, though it has the Nipper ID plate, and I understand that the earliest ones were "pre-dog." It also looks pretty original to my untrained eye, except for maybe the leather elbow and one screw on the lower metal horn support.
Can anyone make an educated guess as to the production year?
Also, I have another nearly identical horn, complete with the threaded metal elbow, rather than leather. I could switch them if the metal elbow would be more appropriate for this machine, but I am not sure which would be more correct for the era of this machine.

Thanks - Mike

Hi Mike, That does look like a nice original Victor E Front Mount. The serial number is pretty high, has a "Remove for Back Bracket" tag, Nipper tag, and a bullet brake. Based on that, (and it probably doesn't matter a bit, put on it what you prefer) I would suggest the threaded elbow horn, assuming it is 19" long and likely to have a decal as more appropriate. What is the length of the threaded horn without the elbow? Nice looking machine! John

Congrats on the Victor E. I would have to agree that a threaded style horn is more appropriate. Your horn also looks like the oversize option. I believe the standard model had a smaller horn.

Both the horn that came with it and my other horn are 19". The horn on the left is the one that came with it. The end is crimped. The one on the right has the threaded elbow. I'll probably go with the one with the metal elbow, as it is in better condition too. Neither horn has a decal - I suppose that I can always put a repro decal on it.

This machine almost didn't come with a horn at all. After I agreed to buy it, a guy who was buying machines tried to tell me that the machine was a reproduction because he wanted to buy it. Then I stepped away, and another guy took the horn off and started to walk away with it. Guy #1 yelled at Guy #2, (so he was good for something), and then I yelled at the horn guy and got the machine out of the room. Yeah, apparently it's a good one...

I would advise to not put a new decal on your threaded horn. I have seen what I believe to be early threaded 19" horns without a decal. I have one with a decal if you need one. But enjoy it as is, it does appear to be all original. John Duffy

Yes: my pre-dog E has the threaded horn with no decal.
