OPERATION:
In this demonstration, I am actually starting the record towards the end of the cylinder to demonstrate two things:
1. how freakishly cool it is to watch the penny go down the chute, over the magnet, and into the coin catch.
2. how the machine resets itself by releasing the spring loaded front lift plate, and the action of the recoil spring (located rear left of mechanism).

I was archiving some old post about the Manhattan and ran across this great informative post, does anyone have a hint of number of Manhattans that are known to exist? Did they all have a porcelain sign on both the front and back of the marquee?

I've been maintaining a census of surviving Manhattans for over 15 years. I know of 17 survivors, though there are likely to be more (a few have come out of the woodwork in recent years). Two of the 17 are 'double' models -- two separate mechanisms in a large back-to-back cabinet.
Both of those have two porcelain signs, which is logical since they are back-to-back. Otherwise, the machine in this thread is the only one reported with two signs.
I wrote an extensive article about Manhattan coin-ops in the March 2016 issue of The Antique Phonograph. It covers pretty much everything that is known about the history and variations of these fascinating machines.
Also -- beware of fakes. There are quite a few around.

Thank you for the great post! Nice to see a beautiful restoration by someone with a great skill set and dedication to complete the research first.
This discussion is exactly why I continue to monitor this forum, everyone kept it to the topic and I learned something (several things actually).
