I think what Lucius describes is actually the second type. I believe this is the first type. turn the brass knob clockwise to mute, counter clockwise to unmute. No flexible cable, only bent metal rods hooked together.

Here's another example of the early type mute ball arrangement, this time from an Edison A 300, Ser. No. SM 2508 (please excuse the masking tape on the mute ball courtesy of a former owner). Also pictured is the "brass knob" Bruce alluded to.
