Thanks for the input everyone. I an going to clean up the existing felt and see what it looks like. Seems there are some tried and tested methods for bringing back felt from the dead so I am going to give it a go. Steve - I will have a go with the fairy washing liquid and allow the turntable to dry in the glorious sunshine we have today.

I've had good results on old felt using a clean wire cat brush- it brings up the nap without tearing out chunks. I've also had excellent results on a velvet turntable using one of those rubber brushes designed to take hair and lint off upholstery.
