How much are these DD's going to cost? Puttin' on the Ritz would be great like others have said. Im about to do a showing at the local museum soon and have been trying to get some songs some people may recognize or be familiar with already. btw, if anyone has any ideas Id love to hear it! I need to go thru all my cylinders and records one day...I don't even know what I have

I personally don't necessarily favor songs with vocals or refrains over those without, it always depends on the orchestration. And many vocal versions are notorious snoozers too. As long as the band is doing a great job there is usually nothing to complain about. My 4-minute cylinder of You're Cream the in my Coffee was received quite well:

I have a nice DD copy of Since my best gal turned me down / Let a smile be your Umbrella, one is instrumental and the other with vocals, a perfect mix that is now on my to do list. These are two super hot upbeat versions. But first, Hurricane and Black Bottom Stomp - also instrumental, btw.

Regarding potential labels on a repro disc, my strong preference would be a black and white label as close to the original as possible. No funky colors please. Probably need to add a "c. 2017" or something similar in small print on the bottom of the label too.

I'm with you WDC re. the instrumental versions. To me it's all about the orchestration. Re. this number in particular, "You're the Cream in My Coffee" I much prefer the Golden Gate Orch. instrumental version over the Ruth Etting version. Sappy orchestration and sappier vocals imho. A matter of personal preference of course. The two versions below for comparison.

I'm in agreement about the orchestration in the Golden Gate version - much more upbeat...

However, I have a soft spot for Ruth Etting, Annette Hanshaw, Helen Kane and other female vocalists of the '20s... and they must have appealed to a great number of people at that time. Ruth was "America's Sweetheart of Song" and lived an interesting life in Chicago with "Moe the Gimp" Snyder...

In the 20s, it was typical when putting out a song to either do it as a ballad that emphasized the singer and the lyrics, as in the Ruth Etting version of You're the Cream in My Coffee, or to do it as Fox trot for dancing, as in the Golden Gate version. The ballad versions were usually slower and the fox trot versions were hotter. But later in the 20s, there was a compromise that had a foxtrot version coupled with a vocal refrain somewhere later in the song. Those tend to be my favorite versions of songs. I don't often listen to fox trot versions of songs, but when I do, it's hard to beat the Golden Gate, or the Green Bros. If anyone out there has Edison DD 52266 Rhapsody in rhythm/ Red Hot! by the McAlpineers, that would be my number one pick to be duplicated on DD. Red Hot is the side I like. I haven't ever heard the Rhapsody side. That is, if Don agreed. Marc.

Alright, I have made some good progress and now run a wear test by just playing the first half of the record repeatedly. I also worked out a first label that uses most of the style that I once did for Charley Hummel, but with some changes here and there, and I stuck to a black and white design most would still recognize as an Edison DD label.

And Larry's wonderful Truetone diaphragm is doing a fantastic job!
