Need ID on this machine.

Post by dutchman »

Stumbled across this little machine at a local antique shop today. Its 23 inches high, has a Columbia reproducer, winds and runs ok and is definitely heavy. Cabinet has no markings other than the circular decal on the door. Thanks Bill K

This looks like a Carryola(spelling). This was a small metal upright machine. There was a painted whit or yellow with children's designs for kids. The Columbia reproducer is a later addition. I'm not sure what the original reproducer looks like, nor the manufacturer.

Thanks - this thing is wood. The shop has a price of $360 on it. Bill K

I'm no expert... but I don't think it is a Carola, I think they were usually metal, made to "look" like wood grain. I will research a little and see if I can find an old advertisement of your machine, it looks kind of familiar to me like I may have seen one like it somewhere else, online or in a book, but painted white....

I think it's a General Phonograph Company "Deluxe" Model- probably the same as Genola.

Stan's site (clarphon.com) has a very similar machine in white second from the bottom on this page:

Thanks for the info. I asked the shop what his best price was, he said he would knock $100 off---that reduced the price to $295   Can anyone identify the decal on the door? I've seen this decal before but for the life of me cannot remember where. Thanks again. Bill K

I found another one of these on a website - it is identical to the one I posted here including the decal, etc. I may make an offer on this machine but I believe the owner has another machine in the shop----a Victor Credenza for the small sum of $625. I haven't a clue what these child machines go for but he came off the original price of $395 down to $295. I may throw another bid out there and see what happens but I hate to go into this blind not knowing the going rate for these or similar machines. Cheers Bill K
