AMBEROLA V RESTORATION UPDATE

Post by flashpanblue »

Hi All
Last year I found this oak Amberola V for $200. It was in rough shape. The finish was shot. The veneer on the lid was lifting and curling at the front and back. The veneer on the crank side was all warped, split and lifting. I was able to re glue and flatten all the veneer issues. I stripped the remaining finish off the cabinet. The finish on the two grills and the inside of the lid was still very nice so I left that alone. The trick was to match the new finish to the old. The original finish was a dark oak with a reddish tone. I was able to match this closely by applying a coat of dark oak stain followed by many coats of amber shellac. The machine plays very well. The reproducer is still stuck in the carriage. I tried putting it in the freezer but it didn't work. I will leave it as is for now but will probably sent it off to Steve m for repair in the future.

That looks great, Pete! The Amberola V is among my favorite machines, and Oak is even better!

If you had not told me what you did, I'd have thought you had found a machine with a really nice original finish. Excellent work!

Ditto - the Amberola V is a favorite of mine. I said as much during a presentation earlier this month at the APS Banquet!

Nice job - -

Nice job!

When you have a spare minute, please add it to the Amberola V registry, here: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=27006

addendum:

Ahh, I see it is already in there, pre-renovation. Thanks.
