VIDEO: How to install a belt on an Edison Triumph (others)

Post by MicaMonster »

I finally put some time aside to make a video showing the WHOLE process for installing a leather belt on an Edison Phonograph. Using my Triumph Model A, I demonstrate the method for splicing the belt ON the machine. Enjoy!

Nice video. Well done. I did not realize the Triumph took the wider belting but I installed the narrower 7/32 on my Triumph and seems to work fine too. Is there any performance difference with the 5/16? It does look cosmetically better I think.

Belt tension is more critical on machines like the Triumph, that have no idler wheel: I know I've had to stretch (and sometimes re-splice) the belt on my Columbias, to get them running right.

Just how tight is tight for optimal performance? In my case I'm thinking of a Triumph. I generally set the belt so that if I grab it between my thumb and forefinger while running the belt can slip slightly but yet stops the mechanism pretty quickly.

On the front of the triumph motor, there is a thumb nut that can be loosened to lower the front of the motor and tighten or loosen belt tensioner
