HELP with Pathé VII Sound Quality

Post by pellicano1 »

All. See video. I am having issues with sound quality. Any assistance would be great! I've tried 2 different reproducers and same result!

The record you are trying to play is a vertical cut Pathé. You will need a Pathé sapphire ball stylus to play this record properly. A steel needle will be floating all over the wide groove and probably damaging the groove as well.

The usual dealers may have the stylus in stock.

You can of course use the lateral position and steel needles to play regular "78"s.

Getting the same sound with Pathé stylus. A little better.

If you are playing that Pathé disc with a Pathé sapphire stylus, you need to rotate the reproducer to the left so the mica is facing the front, you're playing it in the lateral position.

I put it to the left with the stylus installed. Still has a high treble with a bit of muffle sound. Tried to reproducers. Beginning to think it may be the records. They are pretty worn.

When I played it with the reproducer totally inverted with steel needle on Pathé record it sounded fine. Unreal!!

you've probably irreversibly damaged those records with the steel needle at this point. it's painful to watch. as others wrote above, standard lateral cut 78s require the Pathé reproducer to be facing the side while using a steel needle, whereas vertical cut Pathé discs require it to be facing forward while using a sapphire tipped needle. if you're following those instructions and still having sound problems, then you're using the wrong type of record, or using a damaged record, or the issue could be with an incorrectly rebuilt reproducer (which is the least likely, as these are among the most straightforward rebuilds).

I didnt damage anything. They came with the machine this way. I only played it once this way and did not continue to do so.

You should not be able to turn the reproducer that far around. You are probably missing the thumbscrew that you loosen and tighten when changing the position of the reproducer. This fits into a collar which sits above a slot in the tonearm. A sort of pin on the thumbscrew rides in the slot, thus limiting its motion.
