A big chunk of the discussions in this forum deals with fakes, adulterations and respective dealers. I also got accounts of jealous collectors/dealers that damage machines in auctions just to reduce their value. To me, this is not much different from stealing. But I agree that it is dismaying to see such thing happening in such venues, especially in such a small community.

Add to that, the game of "musical chairs" some folks play with box lots of records at auctions. I am sure many of you have looked in a box of records, found a desirable one or two in the lot, bid on the box, only to find that the nice ones are now gone. Probably salted away in a box of classical records or Perry Como records that will sell for a dollar. Nice... I don't even look at records anymore. What's wrong with people????

This (to me) was one of the "not so great" Wayne shows,, and I've been going to Wayne twice a year now for a very long time. It seems more like a record show now, including people selling modern CD's and Cassette tapes. Lots of reproduction stuff too. Tee shirts, mugs I can deal with but ...... I personally was disappointed and left early. Saturday's tailgating was fun though and I bought several nice things.

Something like this happened to me already 10 years ago at the Wayne show when I bought a copy of Let us not forget. I had it stored under the table with another diamond disc in a basket. At the end of the day, both records had disappeared. Since then I have always used a box with a lock. It's simply too risky otherwise. Despite that, it was a great show with lots of interesting people to meet.

That's terrible! I hope you find out who did it. If it makes you feel better, I've sold at an antique mall for 9 years and I've had many things stolen, increasing in the last few years in correlation to the changing demographics. The store and the police are in denial with the crime rise in the area. It's led to the store being filled with thrift junk, because none of the dealers want to bring anything valuable in.

It feels terrible when something is stolen. My advice is to be a nuisance and keep in contact with the people who run the show and anyone else you can bother. I don't know them or how a show works but I find antique mall managers/owners don't care at all and will do nothing unless you bother them like crazy for footage, photos, info. I recently had a $50 28"x24" poster walk out the door. A few years ago, I found out that a fellow dealer at the store regularly stole records from the owner's area of stuff for sale. When I saw him taking out a huge bundle of LPs, he told me, "Well, I really appreciate them, though." The common thread you'll find among these thieves is that they feel that, since they know about something, and that they appreciate something, they are somehow entitled to it. All I'm saying is, you'd probably be surprised at the sorts of people who take things.

thank you for all the comments and anecdotes... I've seen myself what can go on at auctions, and definitely at antique stores and co-ops (I used to have a spot in one myself). the wayne show just seemed different, or maybe I just wanted it to be... it's still a great event and I'll keep going, but I won't be leaving anything unattended any longer.

regarding what happened this past sunday, I've spoken to a few people and I've reached out to mike devecka, who got back to me quickly and helpfully offered to make a couple inquiries (and to see whether there might be some security footage from the lobby camera). I realize that this machine isn't quite a high value item, and that it still probably shouldn't have been left alone even if just for 10 or 15 minutes... and that whoever took it may have just incorrectly thought that it was discarded and abandoned there (even though it was only about noon with hours left to the show). I was just hoping that somehow I could communicate with the two people who seem to be the last ones seen around/inspecting it... at the very least, they may have seen someone else checking it out... and if they did take it, perhaps they'd be good enough to return it or send me a check. I have a pretty decent idea of what they look like as well, so I'll definitely introduce myself at the next show if they attend.

I understand your point but, with all due respect, putting things in a pile at an estate sale and walking away from them, does not mean they now belong to you. Your solution makes more sense.
