What to do when DD stylus goes faster than horn neck?

Post by marcapra »

On my Edison DD phono, B-80, the diamond stylus goes faster across the record than the horn neck, which causes the limit pin to start hitting the left side of the limit bar toward the end of a record. Does anyone have a cure for this? Marc.

Does your machine by chance have a Long Play attachment installed?

The turntable belt is slipping. The mechanical horn feed is on a different mechanism. The horn is advancing along fine....the belt is slipping and slowing down stylus feed.

The turntable belt on my DD A-80 was slipping when I got it. Since it was an original double stitched belt I did not want to replace it. I soaked it in alcohol for a day, cleaned and dried it, which shrunk it back to usable size. I also cleaned the pulleys and everything it touched before re-installing the belt. The pulleys are lined with cork and there is a tiny set screw embedded that holds the pulley under the turntable in place.

My A-80 runs great ever since I did that a few years ago.

Good luck
Andreas

You might also try some belt dressing.

No, it doesn't have a LP attachment. I think Wyatt and Andreas probably have the right answer. Thanks so much guys!!! Marc.

I put on a new belt and that solved the problem of the limit bar hitting the loop for the first record. Now, the new belt keeps slipping off of the pulleys! Obviously, this could only be caused by the new belt being too loose?

Eric Reiss suggests that a thin coating of rubber cement on the inside of the belt may improve performance.

Thank you Lucius! I did an experiment on the B-80 and put the old belt back on. It worked fine now and stays on the pulleys. The new belt must be a tad too big!
