I believe on these the spindle was attached to the turntable.

Thanks Curt for posting the pictures. In all my years of collecting Columbia machines and Clients, I never saw anything like this before. It will be a nice machine when I get done with it. The only Royal machines I have seen are the late ones in the big case and fluted horn. This machine I have looks exactly like like a late Standard Model A. Also, the spindle is set up for the large spindle records. I don't know if it plays Standard or Harmony records. I do know that United and Aretino turntables will not be correct. Also, I'm not sure what kind of horn it would use. Either the short stubby one, or the full size horn. Any information on this machine will appreciated.

Harvey -

I also love the "off brand/odd ball" machines and I have several. Here's pics of a Royal like yours that I sold many years ago and my current Royal that's still in my collection. Is this the "larger" one that you mention? To tell the truth I think it's actually smaller than a Standard A.

Sorry about the sideways view on one of the pics.

Thanks for the pictures, Kent. The top one I have is the late one with the larger case. I never saw the middle one you have shown. It looks like a Talk-o-phone Brooke case. The one I just got looks like a late tall case Standard Model A. I guess there are many variations of the Royal Client machines. That's what make this hobby so interesting.

these royals are cool little machines... although speed regulation can be tricky at times because the on/off switch doubles as the speed control. here are a few photos of a royal like yours that I recently restored...

It's interesting that these earlier Royal Talking Machine models had the larger Standard sized spindle, while all the later models I've seen seem to have the normal spindle. Thanks for posting all these pictures. I especially like the one with the "fancy" case.
