Columbia Grafonola 175 autobrake

Post by Teak »

I own this portable, and the autobrake is completely missing and was wondering if someone could provide information or a picture.

I don't believe that model was equipped with an auto-brake. I know that the one I used to own didn't have one--just the standard manual brake.

The is a "useless" peg on the motorboard and a broken of piece attached to the tonearm, suggesting it had one.

That's interesting. The tonearm on mine was identical to this one, except it was nickel and not gold:

Is is possible to post a photo showing the broken piece on the tonearm?

There are variants on the Columbia portable you own, one of them has the auto break, the other doesn't. I have a couple of them, but I cannot discern from the photos which one you have, can you identify the number? Normally the machine should have a decal with the type number on the record compartment. Also I cannot see any broken part on the tone arm.

This is the Columbia 113A, the British version of the 175. The motor plate is the same, so I presume the brake mechanism will also be the same.
