While rummaging around at my local antiques dealer I found this in the needle tin bin.

Very nice - I think they are probably some kind of thorn treated with a hardening solution.

The German instructions talk about hardened wood needles. They should be re-sharpened before the first use and "can be used indefinitely" / "have an indefinite life expectancy". Otherwise similar claims and description like with bamboo or thorn needles, i.e. do not damage records, no needle noise, etc.
