Amberola 30/ 75 comparison

Post by Stephen_Heatherly »

I've had an amberola 30 for about four years and ever since I got it it's been my favorite machine for playing my blue amberol cylinders. I recently aquired an amberola 75 and found that for some reason it is not as loud as the 30. I have tried the same reproducer in both machines and the 30 is obviously louder. There is nothing stuck in the horn of the 75 and since the two machines are almost exactly the same with the exception of the cabnet and nunber of springs I'm at a loss as to why the 30 would be louder Any idras?

You know that you can edit your submitted posts afterwards to correct typos etc? Happens to me all the time.

Could it be a height difference? Perhaps your 30 is located on a table which makes it at a lower height than the 75's horn?

I really don't think heigth has anything to do with because I move the 30 around to play it in different rooms and it still sounds louder than the 75. Maybe the larger cabinet of the 75 absorbes some of the sound. I really don't know but, I like playing both machines anyway.

Hmmm. Perhaps there is a grille cloth that is obstructing the sound?

As a matter of fact I don't have a grille cloth on either machine.

If you tried the same reproducer and record on both machines and are 100% sure there is no hidden obstruction in the horn, then the only remaining thing to check is that the fit between reproducer and horn is as air-tight as the other. Try a good seal of Vaseline or grease to be sure. Nothing else makes sense.
