I also have such a machine, an early AT in a A-style case. The serial on mine is 208166. It has the Sears Roebuck overlay on the bottom right corner of the banner, which George Paul has dated to a very specific and rather narrow band of time that I have now forgotten and didn't write down.

If we can get him to tell us again, here, we will all know - plus I'll be able to copy it down and put it inside the machine.

I think the A and early AT therefore only differ in the configurations of their motors, where the A has no spring barrel and the AT does. The A has a different serial number sequence, with an example having sold on ebay recently with s/n 79467.

I wonder whether the serial numbers for the early AT started at 200,000? I just can't see them making more than 206,000 to get to the one shown in this thread, considering how rarely the early style shows up today.
Interessante suas colocações Peter.
Teria como mandar uma foto do seu AT?

He asked for pix of mine. Here they are!

I have no lid for mine, and I don’t remember whether the reproducer on it was what came with it.

The Model A had a single spring that is open, like a Gem. The AT, even the earliest ones, had 2 springs in closed barrels.

There's a very late Type A here which is No.200490.

Andreas's early AT is No.206310. This makes it clear that the AT numbering picked up from the late A numbering. It also shows that the transition took place somewhere between 200490 and 206310. :)

There's a more typical AT here that is No.214317. Judging by the rarity of the transitional ATs, I expect only a relative few were assembled.

Peter, thank you for showing your AT, it's original, no restoration like mine.
Thanks for the clarifications Harvey Kravitz and George, we will leave this conversation knowing more of Graphophones A and AT.

I've created a spin-off thread about estimating the dates for early ATs through the Sears sticker like the one on mine:
