What was the type of stain typically used for Oak?

I use aged oak gel stain on a lot of mine .. I am sure others use different products and can add some input too... I buy it at ace hardware store. Tom

Analine dyes were originally used by phonograph manufacturers. These dyes are a colored, translucent liquid that actually soak into the wood without obscuring the grain. Stains are a suspension of pigmented particles that sit on top of the wood, often obscuring the grain. The more aniline dye you apply, the darker the wood becomes. The more stain you apply, the more obscured the grain becomes.
I, personally, like to use original materials when restoring any antique.
