Repairing or replacing parts?

Post by numinenje »

If this is the improper place to post this question, please delete and redirect me. Thank you!

I am in search of information about replacing or repairing a broken part in my music box. Photos included below.

One key or note broke off on the far left. I don't know the manufacturer or what this part is properly called in order to do a proper search. I'm reaching out to music box enthusiasts everywhere for advise. Thank you for your time.

That's called a 'Comb' Jenni. Not an easy repair.

I'm sure there are others but this chap might be able to help.

Thank you Steve, I'll call John and see what he can advise. My hopes are dashed quite a bit... It still plays beautifully and I wish I knew more about it!

Jenni, Have you tried posting your question to the MMD Mechanical Music Digest? Nancy Fratti posts there and she does music box repair. I think she also has a website. There are other members of that site that do repairs.

Hi phonogal, yes I have reached out to Nancy and am anxious for her opinion.

I'm sure someone there can help you out. It's a very nice music box and looks to have been well cared for. Good luck. Jan

On a side venture, is anyone able to help me translate the music page? I'm having a really hard time with the cursive. It is not friendly to my eyes. A photo below.

?, polka
Black hussan, waltz
The Mikado, Three little Maids from School
Banbien de Siville, ? ? ?
Rigoletlo, la ? e mobile

This list is written mostly in French regardless what language the original titles would have been in. A few exceptions like the English title for The Mikado. Here is what I believe it what it says. The songs, except for the waltzes and, the Mexican Serenade, and the polka are arias (songs) from Opera and Operetta. A very nice selection!

1. The Gasparonne, Waltz by C. Millöcker
2. Turlutieine, Polka by Strobl
3. Black Hussar, Waltz by C. Millöcker
4. The Mikado, Three Little Maids from School by Sullivan
5. Barbier de Seville, vous voulez donner by Rossini
6. L'Africaine, Grand Air Di Nelusko by Meyerbeer
7. Rigoletto, La donna e mobile, Verdi
8. Carmen, Introduction 2nd acte by Bizet
9. Mandolina, Mexican Sérénade by Otto Langey
10. Gypsy Baron, Marche by Strauss
11. Oberon, Barcarolle by Weber
12. Tannhäuser, Marche by Wagner

I believe the spelling on the second tune is "Turlutaine"; the Barber of Seville aria is "vous voulez donc"; and the name in the Meyerbeer aria seems to be "Nilusko".
