Victor 4-7 identification

Post by Nick Charles »

I ran across an old 4-7 cabinet but I've never seen a name-plate like this (at least I'm honestly ignorant :P . Check out the oriental characters. Everything else looks to be right although all the internals are missing. Any information about the name-plate would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Actually, that's the typical style nameplate used for Orthophonic Victrolas.

Here are some others, along with those used on earlier Victrola models -- https://www.google.com/search?q=Victrol ... 2&dpr=1.54

(Also see: http://www.victor-victrola.com/Identification.htm)

Victrolas were sold in Latin America and Japan, hence the use of "Asian" characters, but I don't know when that was first introduced.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've only dealt with earlier models and the nameplate threw me as none of my reference materials show one like it. Plus the Asian characters are a puzzle as the supposed provenance doesn't fit.

Finally found what I was looking for...

This explains the Chinese characters used on some of the nameplates -- FROM: http://www.victor-victrola.com/Started3.htm

You've probably found a sticker or metal tag on your Victor Talking Machine that says "1904" or "1906" on it. There is likely some Chinese and Spanish writing on it someplace as well. These dates are not the manufacture date of your phonograph. The dates you see on those tags or stickers are the patent or license dates for certain component designs.

Your Victor product did not come from China or from a Spanish-speaking country. The Chinese and Spanish writing is to protect the patents in those regions, and the translation is: "Registered Trademark".
