Recorder rebuild

Post by callron »

Attempting my first rebuild of a 2 min recorder. Could used some info and advice please:
1. When installing the diaphragm, does the 1st gasket get fixed to the body? If so, what kind of adhesive?
2. Next, does the mica get attached to the 1st gasket? If so, what kind of adhesive.
3. Does the 2nd gasket get attached to the mica? If so, with what?
4. Then, is the beeswax used to seal the assembly to the body? Or......?
5. Lastly, What glue for attaching the stylus holder to the mica?

If there are any instructions available that cover this, would appreciate a referral.

Thank you in advance,

Ron

1) No.

2) No.

3) Yes. Beeswax.

4) It is used to seal the 2nd gasket to
the mica and to the metal edge of the
swinging weight. It must be air tight.

5) Stratena. If none is available, can use beeswax.

Gaskets can be made from scratch by hand.

Minimum tools:

Alcohol lamp.

Beeswax.

Teaspoon.

Tweezers.

Beeswax working tools, made from thin strips of
sheet metal.

Flake shellac.

Calipers.

Drafting compass.

Exacto knife.

Thin cardboard such as manilla office
folders. .015 and .020 inch thick.

Details available upon request.

Chuck is right. The diaphragm is .002" thick mica. back of it is a waxed paper washer, then the diaphragm (centered not touching the sides, and then the other paper gasket on top, beeswax used to seal it.
