it appears it was mechanically assisted somehow any ideas TI.A

Pretty wacky looking. Looks like all the rod does is limit the needle drop? Maybe from an early changer.

Could that rod be designed to carry some sort of counterweight which is missing?

well maybe ,but it does “latch” sort of on the side that makes me think it was lowered slowly by another rod or arm
