Had something weird happen while disassembling a Victor spring barrel. I pried the snap ring off the spring barrel and the spring barrel assembly exploded, pieces went flying everywhere. The little arbor shaft/cylinder that was in the center of the spring flew across the room, the spring barrel cover was somewhere behind me, a small piece (the center few coils) of the spring were at my feet, the snap ring was buried in some stuff on the other end of the workbench, the main part of the spring was on the floor on the other side of the workbench, and the spring barrel was still in my hand.
FORTUNATELY, there was no damage to me or the spring barrel, however the spring was toast. The only thing that was different about this spring barrel was that the spring barrel shaft was really hard to remove. It shouldn't have been, the spring arbors are cylindrical and usually slide easily over the spring barrel shaft.
I'm not sure exactly what happened. Before I took the motor apart, it wound up OK and seemed to run just fine on the workbench, but not very long. The spring wasn't particularly rusty, nothing else seemed unusual about the spring barrel. It just exploded.
C'est la vie....

I'm glad you weren't hurt! I think I'll start wearing safety googles for this procedure, dorky-looking or not!

WOW!!! I am glad that you didn't get hurt. Your story brought back memories of my experience with a Columbia motor. http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... lit=attack

I saw a You Tube video where the spring was taken out of the barrel inside an old pillow case. Looks much safer.
