I've finally gotten around to restoring my late 1920s Emerson Console Phonograph with nice spruce Music Master Horn speaker. I got the double spring barrel out of the Emerson motor housing which is quite different that the Victrola barrels. This has a "split" barrel with two halves secured by four screws. There is a rod that goes through the two half shafts secured by a set screw in a collar on one side of the shaft. The other half shaft has the large diameter drive cog permanently attached to the shaft.
I was able to remove the set screw to remove the full length rod from both half shafts. The half shafts appear to be pinned/secured to their respective center spring loop. I was able to remove the collar side spring with shaft attached and clean and re-grease. However, the other half shaft, since it is permanently secured to the large cog on the outside and to the center loop spring on the inside, (see pics) I see no way to remove the spring from that half?? Is there a trick to removing the center shaft from the interior spring or am I missing something in disconnecting the shaft and cog? Or should I just clean what I can, re-grease and .... move on?
Thanks for any responses!
