Paht`e Phonograph

Post by Edisonfan »

Any thoughts on a Path`e Phonograph? Only reason I ask, Is I know a dealer who has a number of Path`e records for sale.

I don't need a floor machine, a table top one would work just as well.

I'm assuming you're talking about a Pathé disc phonograph, not a cylinder machine.

I have a Pathé tabletop, a model III IIRC, and it's - OK. Even with new gaskets in the reproducer, it's not particularly impressive on either the vertical or lateral settings. I use it strictly for Pathé verticals, which, as I'm sure you know, need a sapphire ball stylus that is not exactly easy to get these days. Of my "every day" machines, I'd say this is the one I care about the least.

I will be curious to hear what others say.

The Pathé table models with a bowl in lid sound reflector such as the "Reflex" and the "Elf" produce a loud clear sound.

Alternatively you could use a reproducer with an adapter such as this to play Pathé discs on a conventional machine :

The Pathé Actuelles are great machines. They are floor models only but play both vertical and lateral cut records. They are also really cool machines!

I had a nice Pathé Model 60 similar to the Model 50. It mostly sat since most of the records that I listen to are cylinder, lateral 78’s and Diamond Discs.

It was a beautiful tabletop but not a match to a Victor. If you want a Pathé go for it but I think you can get the same music for a Victor.

I think the Actuelles look neat and probably would consider that because of the cone horn technology.

Just my honest opinion.
